Fishtail Braids: The tightly woven secret revealed.

November 30, 2010 § Leave a comment

Rihanna, Kim Kardashian, and Angela Simmons demonstrate the versatility of the fishtail braid

Stylish with irresistible practicality, the fun and oh so romantic fishtail braid remains a hair-do. Whether you wear the tightly woven braids a little messy, ultra sleek or multiple braids on one mane, the goal is the same – stay away from the school girl cute, good style gone wrong look. Think edgy meets soft and sweet as you seek to capture one of the varying vibes of these fishtail braids. Coiffing this sultry plait is a simple task so long as a few lessons are heeded. See below for written and video guidance.

This braid turns out best if you pull hair back into a tight ponytail first and separate the ponytail into 2 strands instead of three.

Fishtail Braid step 1

1. Once you have separated the ponytail, you are going to start out by holding the 2 strands in your left hand.

Fishtail Braid step 2

2. Now you are going to take a thin piece from the outside of the right strand and join it with the left strand.

Fishtail Braid step 3

3. Reverse how you are holding hair and switch hands.

Fishtail Braid step 4

4. With your left hand take a thin piece from the outside of the left strand and join it with the right strand.

Fishtail Braid step 5

5. You are going to repeat steps 2 and 3 until the braid is as long as you desire. Then finish with an elastic.

Kimmy’s Comment: I can’t get over how stunning Kylie looks in these shots from a recent fashion photo shoot she did with Nick Saglimbeni. Monica did the styling and chose the most gorgeous pieces for Kylie to wear. I am a very proud big sister!

Bringing back that old school vibe

Something about Bruno Mars’ voice is enchanting. It has a delicacy, that makes “I wanna be a billionaire so fricking bad,” (one of my favorite lines of the year, by the way) sound just as smooth and supple as, “When I see your face, there’s not one thing I’d change, cause you’re amazing just the way you are.” Lyrics with completely different vibes, but from an artist who knows his delivery and sticks to it. You can’t help but enjoy his voice.

And you can’t forget his style. As old school as they come (peep that  doo-wop hair), but perfect for 2010 and beyond. He puts it all together in just the right way. We’re loving it.

We love when a new artist takes the stage and makes it his own from the outset, without a care as to how en vogue his style may be. The sights and sounds are just refreshing.

Bruno Mars has a special touch, and with his debut album Doo-Wops & Hooligans just released in October, we’re sure there’s much to be seen and heard from him. Here at BJ we’re wishing Mr. Mars a long, successful career, one where he never forgets what makes him so unique.

From dainty, to dreamy, to downright darling a few kind words on a delicate piece of stationary always lighten the mood. Strategically placed ruffles, ribbon curled to perfection, perfectly sprinkled sparkles or maybe a doodle so cute you just can’t contain yourself, the journey only ends with your imagination.  Scour the aisles of a unique stationary boutique or get crafty at home. The experience can be both relaxing and magical.

Don’t save the beauty for wedding days only. Perfectly designed stationary can be used anytime the mood is right.

Planning a party? The invitation sets minds aflutter and prepares the guests for every ounce of amazingness you have in store. Saying thank you for a good deed done? Your man may not receive it as well as your best girlfriend, but give as your heart dictates.

Prince William chose his lucky lady: Kate Middleton

November 16, 2010 § Leave a comment

It’s official people, Prince William is taken. Bride-to-be and Future Queen Kate Middleton will be his blushing bride on that regal day. Also known as “Waity Katy” she is rumored to have captured Prince William’s attention when she modeled black underwear beneath a transparent dress during a charity fashion show. Their long running romance commenced in 2001, and over the eight year stunt, they have co-habitated in a shared house. A bit unconventional, but so was their engagement announcement via TWITTER!

The first tweet came from the royal home the Clarence House: “The Prince of Wales is delighted to announce the engagement of Prince William to Miss Catherine Middleton –www.princeofwales.gov.uk” AOL News reported that the tweet out-scooped Prince William’s website, causing a  flurry of updates.

Soon to follow was a tweet from the British Monarcy: “The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh are absolutely delighted at the news of Prince William and Catherine Middleton’s engagement.”

The couple is said to marry in Spring or Summer 2011. “2011 would be Diana’s 50th birthday and also the 30th anniversary of her wedding to his father,” Katie Nicholl — author of William and Harry: Behind the Palace Walls and royal correspondent for the Mail on Sunday — told Us.

The ring on Kate Middleton's finger

THE RING! According to BBC, Prince William gave Kate his late mother Diana’s platinum and 18-carat sapphire and diamond engagement ring from Garrard Jewelers. AOL reports that Diana chose the ring, which cost $28,000 at the time, from Garrard Jewelers.

Kate is the daughter of self-made millionaires, Michael Middleton and Carole Middleton; owners of a children’s toy and party business. She is also the eldest of three children and has certainly set a high bar for her younger siblings.

Post wedding plans include Prince William continuing his service in the Royal Airforce.

Perhaps your childhood dreams of coming into royalty have been dashed, but remain hopeful. Your prince charming is on the way.

We love it! Congrats to the happy couple!

Sophisticatingly Chic: Even on those unglamorous days

November 12, 2010 § Leave a comment

Comfy, casual but still sophisticatingly chic. (We have a tendency to make up words at B.J.)  Sometimes the events of the day require us to put the pumps and peplums on hold in favor of something a little more practical. Some looks just don’t work on grocery store and take your niece to the park days. But even when duty calls, having just the right look can keep your inner fashionista on display for the world to see.

Nothing sets a tracksuit off like a great pair of flats.

Jeans, an oversized, belted cardy (there’s another one of those words) and military inspired boots will never let you down.

No reason to go out and spend money on looks for those down and dirty or simple and relaxed days. Peruse your closet. You’re bound to find some amazing combinations that will keep you fly even when the agenda isn’t so glamorous.

We all know what the late, great CoCo Chanel said. “I don’t understand how a woman can leave the house without fixing herself up a little. If only out of politeness. And then, you never know, maybe that’s the day she has a date with destiny. And it’s best to be as pretty as possible for destiny.”

Words of wisdom to hold near and dear.

Shoegasm Du jour: Nordy Rack (PLRG Style)

November 11, 2010 § Leave a comment

These shoes illustrate that last season’s discarded goods can become this season’s treasured finds. Discount couture, every Poor Little Rich Girl’s favorite genre of shopping (outside of vintage, of course!). One’s imagination is free to flutter about without being hindered by this season’s “must-have” price tags. There is something pure, almost organic about scavenging racks for a reasonably priced, ultra fly piece, and then scoring a “one of a kind” pair of pumps. The experience instigates a rush of adrenaline that only frugal fashionistas can truly savor. As they are the type of shoppers unapologetically addicted to a steal, destined to score and relentlessly hunting for magical pieces that make a wardrobe sparkle. Baby low pumps, glamorous heels, fire hot wedges – all labeled Fall 2010 “must have”, but marked down due to their debut date falling sometime last season. Ranging from $100-$299, tell me you do not want a pair!

Below are my finds of the day. These shoes punctured my heart, as they tugged too hard on my heartstrings begging me to take them home. Well they did come home, but in picture form- forever immortalized in my memory card lol… But since I am honest, I shall tell you that I sneaked away with a pair of Tory Burch flats for $50… Today was a good day.

Where Am I?
